1924 MTR, established way back in 1924 in Bangalore, it’s more than just a restaurant—it’s a tradition. Also, for the South Indians especially people from Karnataka, it is an emotion. MTR (Mavalli Tiffin Room) is one of those places that captures the heart of South Indian cuisine and makes you feel at home with every bite. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted with the comforting aroma of freshly prepared dosas, soft idlis, and pooris.
What really makes MTR special is the care and authenticity they put into every dish—just like how it is made at home. You are sure to fall in love with MTR’s simplicity, the flavors, and the unmistakable charm that makes every visit feel like a cherished memory. Besides, it’s a place where tradition meets taste, and an experience that we really enjoyed. Here is a list of dishes that we ordered and enjoyed in the newly opened 1924 MTR in Mississauga.
Mini Idly with Sambhar
Idly from Karnataka cannot go wrong and this one did not disappoint. The mini idlies dipped in tasty sambhar(wasn’t that sweet after all) is the perfect starter. Would highly recommend this for kids as this is very light on their stomach and healthy.
Rava Idly
Rava idli is traditional twist with a good twist. It is made with Bombay Rava(Semolina Cake) and cooked similar to Idly. It is infused with good fragrant spices, tempered with mustard seeds, coriander, and cashews. This was offered with a ghee, coconut chutney and sambhar. This was wholesome and delicious. Clearly, this is exactly what we get in India. MUST TRY

Benne Dosa
Benne Dosa at MTR is a crispy, golden-brown dosa cooked with a generous amount of butter, giving it a rich, indulgent flavor. It’s crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, served with their signature chutney and sambar. Alternatively, I would recommend Masala Dosa instead. For people used to the size of dosas at other Indian restaurant beware this is a little smaller. COULD TRY

Poori Saagu
For many, Poori is most favorite tiffin. There was less oil in the fluffy pooris. The saagu made of perfectly mashed potatoes was mild and delicious. I love my pooris with coconut chutney and this one was perfect. SHOULD TRY.

Coffee/ Badam Milk
It is a crime if you go to a Karnataka based restaurant and not try their coffee. The coffee was strong and was perfect. Do not miss on this one. The hot badam milk would be my recommendation for people who do not have caffeine. This is under the category of MUST TRY.
Tiffin Combo
The Combo Plate at MTR is a well-rounded meal that offers a variety of their signature dishes on a single platter. The variety included Poori, chutney, vadae, juice, rice of the day, kesari bath, kara bath, sambhar, saahu, and raita. The quantity is limited but should fill your tummy and heart for sure. If you are unsure about what to try or if you want to try it all in small quantities, this is your choice. I would rate this COULD TRY just because this is not for everyone.
Kadlekai Masale
Peanuts roasted and seasoned with spices. Peanuts are something we love and this was really good. It was on the spicier side though. It looks like it is available on only certain days. But this would be on the SHOULD TRY side.
Overall Rating: SHOULD TRY
This is a should try restaurant. I would have rated this a must try if only all the choices on the menu were available. This is a popular restaurant so visitors who be patient as the wait time would be a touch high. A plea to the restaurant owners would be make the pricing a little affordable for everyone especially with the size of the dosas being small.
