Losing a job can be tough, both emotionally and professionally. The recent wave of layoffs, especially when tied to performance labels, can make it even harder. What’s even more puzzling is that while job cuts continue, new opportunities are also being posted.
During my job search, I’ve learned a few things that helped me stay motivated. If you’re going through a similar phase, here’s my advice on how to navigate this journey with resilience and optimism.
Take Time to Recharge
The first instinct after a layoff is often to panic, but take a moment to breathe. Don’t blame yourself—job losses happen for many reasons beyond individual performance. Give yourself a week or two to reset. Use this time to catch up on things you’ve put off—whether it’s finishing a DIY project, reading a book, or simply spending quality time with family and friends. A refreshed mind is better equipped for the job hunt ahead.

Rebuild and Expand Your Network
Your network can be one of your strongest assets in your job search. Keep your LinkedIn profile updated, reconnect with old colleagues, and engage with professionals in your industry. Seek out coffee chats and informational interviews to understand market trends and uncover hidden opportunities.
Pro Tip: Always send a connection request with a personalized message—it helps create a meaningful conversation.

Apply Strategically, Not Endlessly
It’s tempting to apply to every job you come across, but a more strategic approach works better. Set aside dedicated time to apply, but also take breaks to avoid burnout. Customize your resume for roles that align with your strengths and interests. Writing a thoughtful cover letter can make a difference, so don’t shy away from adding a personal touch.
Pro Tip: Referrals remain one of the best ways to get noticed by recruiters.
Expect Some Ghosting (but Follow Up Anyway)
After posting about my layoff, I received many messages from recruiters and connections. However, I never heard back from at least 75% of them. While frustrating, this is part of the process. Stay persistent, follow up when necessary, and don’t take it personally. Keep your momentum going by focusing on the next opportunity.
Leverage Technology to Learn and Grow
Upskilling during a job search can be empowering. Platforms like YouTube and LinkedIn Learning offer free resources to enhance your skills. Podcasts became a new favorite of mine—they provided insights, inspiration, and confidence. AI tools can also help you refine interview responses, but make sure to personalize them to reflect your authentic voice.
Job loss can feel like a major setback, but it’s also an opportunity for growth, reflection, and new beginnings. While the job search process can be exhausting—filled with ghosting, rejections, and uncertainty—remember that you’re not alone. Taking time to reset, strategically networking, and continuously upskilling can help you navigate this phase with confidence.
Most importantly, trust in yourself and your abilities. The right opportunity will come, even if it takes time. Stay persistent, leverage your network, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
